The party line on John Woo, which I dispute, is that he made films in Hong Kong and was brilliant, came to Hollywood and was rubbish, and has now gone back to China to be brilliant again. His period war spectacular Red Cliff may be better than several of his American blockbusters, but it falls some way below the absurdly entertaining Face/Off (1997), and the Woo picture it most resembles, oddly, is his World War II Nicolas Cage action movie Windtalkers (2002).
It’s 208 AD and a slow news day, as we gear up gradually for pitched battle between the Han Dynasty and adjacent kingdoms, represented by the viceroy of Wu (Tony Leung) and the military advisor of Xu (Takeshi Kaneshiro). Figuring out who’s, er, who (sorry) takes most of the film, which remains basically impersonal boys’ own stuff, though Yu’s wife (Chiling Lin -- great name) does sneak in later on to administer a strategically crucial cup of poisoned tea to the enemy leader (a nicely dignified Zhang Fengyi)
